With this in mind, here are five PS4 games one must play immediately, along with five others that need PS5 versions that can improve technical issues and let the material shine the way they should. Please note, not all of the games mentioned below have confirmed PS5 versions waiting in the wings.

10 Wait To Play: Grand Theft Auto V

Grand Theft Auto V is an unprecedented success. Its sales are still going strong seven years after its original release on the PS3 and Xbox 360. Rockstar recently announced a PS5 version which aims to further improve the experience.

Even though the game is from one generation ago, the PS4 version is far from perfect. Hopefully, the PS5 release smoothes out the frame rate in addition to updating the wonky and imprecise aiming mechanics.

9 Play Right Now: Marvel’s Spider-Man

Quality superhero games are few and far between; however, Insomniac knocked it out of the park with 2018’s Spider-Man, a PS4 exclusive.

Story and missions aside, simply swinging through the New York City streets is pure bliss. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is going to release alongside the PS5, so play the original game now before heading into the next installment.

8 Wait To Play: Bloodborne

FromSoftware has made several of the most celebrated games of the last fifteen years. Bloodborne is often seen as one of the best PS4 games ever released due to its aesthetic and brutal, yet satisfying combat.

It is still exclusive to the console, but several performance issues prevent it from shining as bright as it should. Rumors have been swirling about a possible PC version. If this is true, here’s hoping it makes it to PS5 as well.

7 Play Right Now: Ghost Of Tsushima

Seen as something of a swan song for the PS4, Ghost of Tsushima is a gorgeous romp through 13th-century Japan. The open-world Samurai adventure uses cues from nature like animals and the wind to guide the player towards their destination.

The combat is also engaging, with players having to focus on enemy movement counter appropriately. Ghost of Tsushima looks and plays great on the PS4, so there is no reason to wait until the next console generation.

6 Wait To Play: Red Dead Redemption 2

Arthur Morgan’s story is as massive and brutal as the world in which it is set. The PS4 version runs well enough and the graphics are gorgeous. However, anyone who has not played it by now probably would not mind waiting a bit for a next-generation version.

While Red Dead Online is not quite the phenomenon GTA Online is, it still seems logical for Rockstar to keep the online component going into the next consoles.

5 Play Right Now: Death Stranding

Hideo Kojima’s game polarized fans upon release with its bonkers narrative and unique gameplay focusing more on traversing landscapes than fighting enemies.

Of course, the weird and unexpected is exactly what fans want from the auteur game designer. Death Stranding feels and looks great, so no reason to wait for an upgraded release. PC players receive some extra goodies, however.

4 Wait To Play: Final Fantasy VII Remake

Any fan of the original game has most likely played through this jaw-dropping recreation of Final Fantasy VII’s Midgar chapter. Anyone who has not is better off waiting for an upgraded version for the PS5, assuming it ever comes out.

As beautiful as the graphics are, some textures load in extremely slow and look like they are from a PlayStation 2 game. A little extra horsepower should fix these graphical issues, however.

3 Play Right Now: God Of War

One of the most appealing promises of next-generation gaming is the alleviation and complete elimination of load times. 2018’s PS4 exclusive, God of War, already accomplished this, at least to a certain extent.

This is especially impressive considering the scope of the world and the visuals. It is difficult to imagine what improvements can be made to such an exquisite product.

2 Wait To Play: Control

Thankfully, Remedy’s Control already has a PS5 and Xbox Series X version confirmed for release. Currently, only those with good PCs really experienced the game in its optimal setting.

Both base and PS4 Pro owners got a game riddled with frame rate issues and stutters during combat. Despite all this, Control remains a fantastic game regardless of the platform. It will be nice for console players to have a smoother experience.

1 Play Right Now: The Last Of Us Part II

Naughty Dog is so ahead of the curb technologically, The Last of Us Part II already looks like a PS5 game. Playing through the story is a massive undertaking, taking anywhere between twenty and thirty hours to complete.

Few linear single-player games take even half as long to beat, and almost none of them contain this level of graphical fidelity. Maybe a PS5 version would run at sixty frames per second, but as it is now, The Last of Us Part II is required gaming for all PS4 owners.
