John Cena might make his much-awaited return to WWE at the Royal Rumble early next year to compete in the Royal Rumble match. He might win the Royal Rumble Match and challenge the WWE or the Universal Champion. He could defeat the champion and become the first ever man to hold 17 World Championships. But there could also be other plans for the leader of the Cenation.
WrestleMania is just a few months away and we can expect John Cena to set up a mega match this year at the Show of Shows. So who can potentially face Cena? I have penned down 5 possible opponents for Cena at WrestleMania 35.
#5 Samoa Joe
Samoa Joe vs John Cena is a dream match for fans around the world. Both of the Superstars are extremely talented. Some of you might not know this but Cena and Joe started their wrestling careers together in Ultimate Pro Wrestling (UPW). Both of them took different paths in the early stage of their respective careers.
John Cena came to WWE at a very young age and successfully became one of the top and greatest Superstars in wrestling history. While at the same time Joe was working on independent wrestling promotions. This could definitely be the plot of the storyline between these two men.
Fans would love to see how WWE will book this rivalry. Also, both Cena and Joe have extraordinary promo skills and both guys will definitely kill it on the microphone in the build towards this match.
It is also the perfect way to put Joe over. Cena is at the end of his career and he could help a Superstar like Joe to get over.
#4 The Undertaker
The Undertaker came out of his rumored retirement this year to fight John Cena at WrestleMania 34. After calling out The Undertaker for months, ‘The Phenom’ answered the challenge of John Cena at WrestleMania 34.
The match was a dream match for the fans and the fans expected that this match will tear the house down but the match was a bust. Undertaker squashed Cena in just under three minutes.
Because of the weird booking of their match at this year’s WrestleMania, there is a high possibility that the Undertaker and Cena may face each other again at WrestleMania 35 next year.
Both of the Superstars have a massive fan following and a match between them would definitely make WrestleMania much more interesting.
This time, both guys could be putting their careers on the line. Cena vs the Undertaker in a career vs career match would be really exciting. Both guys have been the face of the company for many years. If one of them would have to retire after the match it will make the match must see and definitely increase the ratings.
#3 Drew McIntyre
Drew McIntyre has been on quite a run since returning to WWE. He had an amazing run in NXT. He competed in some of the best matches in NXT history and even became the NXT Champion. He debuted on the main roster after WrestleMania 34.
Since his main roster debut, the ‘Scottish Psychopath’ has defeated many excellent wrestlers. He has given amazing performances and has solidified his position as the top heel on Raw. He has been heavily protected since his debut and according to some reports he is in line for a major push in 2019.
That major push could start at the Grandest Stage of Them All. McIntyre will definitely be involved in a major match at WrestleMania and if he isn’t in the Universal Title picture at Wrestlemania, I could see him facing John Cena.
Cena vs McIntyre is a big money match. A match with John Cena at WrestleMania would be an ideal place to establish Drew McIntyre as the next top guy and would also boost his credibility.
#2 Dean Ambrose
With the current storyline involving Rollins and Ambrose, many of you might think that this match will never happen. But please let me explain.
According to some reports, Seth Rollins will be facing Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 35. That means that Rollins will be soon dropping his Intercontinental Title and the person most likely to win it from Rollins is none other than ‘The Lunatic Fringe’ Dean Ambrose. Seth will most likely be defeated by Ambrose at TLC.
This means that we will not get to see Dean Ambrose vs Seth Rollins at WrestleMania. So who will Ambrose face? That is where John Cena comes in. Cena is a top babyface while Ambrose is a heel. The company might be looking to set up a huge ‘face vs heel’ match for the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania.
Also, Cena hasn’t won the IC title in his whole career, if Cena wins the IC title he will become a grand slam Champion. And even if Cena loses it will be a huge boost to Ambrose’s career and it will help him to establish himself as the top heel and then he can go on to face other Superstars.
#1 The ‘New’ Daniel Bryan
No one really thought that this match could happen until Daniel Bryan’s recent heel turn. With Bryan turning heel, there is a high probability that Bryan will be the champion till WrestleMania 35. With Bryan’s current character, Cena is the best opponent for Bryan at WrestleMania as he is one of the top babyfaces and also Cena and Bryan have a history with each other.
Their personal relationship with one other can also come into play and this will definitely be an intriguing storyline. They could get really personal on the mic and deliver amazing promos. With Bryan’s current character even the fans might start to root for Cena.
John Cena is yet to capture his 17th World Championship and Wrestlemania is the perfect place for him to win the title and become the first ever man to win 17 World Championships.
This match is also best for business as these two stars have a huge fan following and a rivalry between them would definitely boost the ratings.

title: “5 Possible Opponents For John Cena At Wrestlemania 35” ShowToc: true date: “2023-01-30” author: “James Case”
Last year, he suffered a humiliating loss at WrestleMania at the hands of The Undertaker. However, the match was poorly booked and did not live up to its expectations. In 2019, Cena is expected to participate and compete in WrestleMania 35. However, there has been no proper storylines, feuds, or any kind of rivalries introduced for him yet.
There are loads of speculations about whom he might face, and a couple of names have popped up. Here are five such possible contenders to fight John Cena at WrestleMania.
#5 John Cena vs Randy Orton
The history between these two wrestlers is massive. They have had some of the best matches and cruel encounters against one another in the history of professional pro-wrestling. Randy Orton is probably the best heel the world has ever witnessed, and John Cena is the face whom everyone loves to see.
If a match is planned for these two amazing wrestlers, it would be a great move on the part of WWE. They have not battled each other for a long time, and a match between these two superstars at WrestleMania would be outstanding to watch.
Currently, neither Cena nor Orton has been booked in any feuds for 2019. Therefore it would be a great decision if WWE decides to rekindle their rivalry and have them compete against one another one more time at the greatest of all PPVs in sports entertainment.
Will this match happen or not? It is just a matter of time for the WWE fans to find out at WrestleMania 35.
#4 Brock Lesnar or Braun Strowman
John Cena has won 16 World Championships, and he tops the list along with Ric Flair for winning the maximum number of world titles. However, John Cena has never won the Universal Championship. Therefore, this blot on his otherwise exemplary career could be removed if he is booked in a match against the Universal Champion.
Currently, Brock Lesnar is the Universal Champion in WWE. Braun Strowman is scheduled to face him at the Royal Rumble for the title. The winner of that match could be made to compete against John Cena for the championship. Cena has faced both Lesnar and Strowman. A match between Cena and any two of these giants would be a treat to watch.
It would help Cena win his 17th World title, and etch his name in history as the wrestler with the maximum number of world championship titles.
#3 Big Show
Big Show is a veteran in the WWE who is currently performing on SmackDown. It is a fact that he won’t be competing much longer, and would retire within a couple of years. However, before his retirement, he deserves a good match at WrestleMania. The best option would be to square him off against John Cena.
Cena and Show have a lot of history together. They have fought each other, and also fought for each other in the past. Both John Cena and Big Show know each other inside out, and they have had some good matches on several occasions.
If WWE management decides to plan a match between John Cena and Big Show, it would be ‘best for business’. The match would be entertaining and WrestleMania worthy.
#2 Samoa Joe vs John Cena
Samoa Joe has competed in several pro-wrestling promotions, but is a highly underrated superstar in the WWE. Joe is a former NXT Champion, and is currently feuding with Jeff Hardy.
He has been involved in several classic matches in WWE and elsewhere. However, a wrestler of his calibre certainly deserves a classy match at WrestleMania. The best possible option would be to make a match between John Cena and Samoa Joe.
Cena is someone who knows how to get the best out of his opponents, and a clash between the duo would be a good way to establish supremacy over one another. Even though John Cena has defeated several wrestlers of various shapes and sizes, he has never faced someone as dominant and athletic as Samoa Joe.
The WWE Universe would look forward to this match, and the creative team of WWE should make this match happen at WrestleMania.
#1 Seth Rollins
Seth Rollins is undoubtedly one of the best wrestlers in the WWE today, and he is a man carrying the entire RAW roster on his shoulders. Rollins is the current Intercontinental Champion, and was a WWE Champion as well.
He is an excellent brawler, and has been in feuds with John Cena before. Therefore, a face-off between John Cena and Seth Rollins at WrestleMania would be a delight to watch.
John Cena and Seth Rollins are top notch players, as they can convert an ordinary match into a dream contest. Rollins had an outstanding 2018, and he would love to keep the momentum rolling in 2019 as well.
Cena on the other hand did not compete much in 2018. For him to make up and accelerate his career even further, this match at WrestleMania is a must. The creative team of WWE should plan the match accordingly.
